Did you know...that in St. Croix County, Wis., one in 11 households is food insecure? That means that, at times, these families can’t access enough healthy food to lead an active life.
People can avoid feeling hungry if they eat enough calories. But that doesn’t mean they will be healthy. In fact, those who have low incomes and can’t afford healthy foods have higher rates of Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases.
Only about 20 percent of a person’s health is determined by the care they receive in hospitals and clinics. That’s why HealthPartners is invested in improving societal and economic factors where we can. And, it’s why we’ve launched efforts to encourage people in our community to adopt healthy behaviors.
We’re now working with several area food shelves through our PowerUp initiative. We’ve partnered with these organizations to increase the amount of healthy foods they have available. We’re helping them make those foods more visible and desirable. And, we’re giving them healthy and easy-to-make recipes to share with people.
You can support your local organization so that it, too, can strive to provide a “Better Shelf for Better Health(PDF).” Our registered dietitians at Hudson Hospital & Clinic put together a checklist to help you out.
Next time you go grocery shopping, take along these ideas for stocking a healthy food pantry. They’re also the donations food shelves need most!
