Welcome to my blog! I'm Jean Weiler, Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Services Manager, Hudson Hospital & Clinic.
Many people have started asking themselves, “Where does my food come from?” Hudson Hospital & Clinic participates in a national effort to promote Healthy Foods in Health Care. Part of this effort includes purchasing more fresh, healthy products from local vendors, Hudson Hospital’s Nutrition Department began purchasing from a local farmers and vendors. This was an effort to purchase farm fresh produce and support the local community. The local food products are serves to our patients, visitors and staff. We've had a great response to our local purchasing efforts!
Here's a snapshot of our healthy foods in health care efforts:
- Purchasing from a local CSA (Community Service Agriculture - the Threshing Table) in 2011
- Over the past couple years, we began purchasing live stock from the 4H auction at the St. Croix County Fair.
- Since then, as part of the on-site Community Garden, Nutrition Department plots are gardened.
The local foods are used for patient meals and for serving café meals to employees and visitors.
In the coming season we will add additional vegetables, dairy and livestock from local farms. Our goal in 2014 is to purchase 20% or more of the food we serve from local sources.
We want to tell our patients and café customers that the vegetable of the day and your entree is from a local farm and your milk is from a local dairy.
