Dan Greenwald leaves gift to three local non-profit groups Article from Hudson Star-Observer 12-24-2009
Hudson Hospital Foundation, Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center and The Phipps Center for the Arts all received a large holiday gift this season from the estate of Dan Greenwald.
Greenwald, former Board Chair of Carpenter and Hudson Hospital Foundation, as well as patron of the Phipps, bequeathed $10,000 to each of the organizations as a legacy gift.
Greenwald died January 12 at the age of 86.
Upon Dan's request, his family has currently challenged the three organizations to utilize the $30,000 bequest and leverage the community to raise an additional $30,000. All three organizations have accepted the challenge and are currently raising funds for operations, programming, and endowment; all would appreciate the support of achieving Dan's Wish.
Greenwald was extremely active in the Hudson Hospital Foundation and the Carpenter Nature Center. He also appreciated the arts, demonstrated by his gift to the Phipps.
Greenwald was a charter member of the Hudson Health Foundation in 1984 and was serving as the president when he died, a position he had held since 1987. He was also a long-serving member of the Hudson Hospital Board.
He was instrumental in bringing the Lifeline Medical Alert Emergency Response Service to Hudson. The Foundation purchased Lifeline machines for Hudson residents; this helped many people continue living independently in their own homes. Lifeline is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
He was also a 15-year board member of the Carpenter Nature Center and served as its president for six years. Greenwald served as the Trustee of the Al and Laurie Hein Trust, which has contributed generously to a wide variety of local causes over the past 15 years.
He was the past chair, and a long-time supporter, of the Al Hein Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Hudson Hospital Foundation.
Greenwald spent most of his career with the Ford Motor Co. with stints in New Jersey, Kansas City and St. Paul. His positions included quality control manager, production manager and manufacturing engineering manager. He retired in 1980.
After retiring, he had various positions with Advantek Inc., Minnetonka, MN and Advantek GmbH, Freiburg, Germany. With Advantek, he made frequent trips to Tokyo, Singapore and Germany.
"Greenwald's life goals were to secure the future of health, nature's beauty and the arts for the community of Hudson," said current hospital foundation President Kari Rambo. "This time of year we reflect on the impact we've made to ourselves, our families and our community."
"Dan Greenwald has strengthen philanthropy in Hudson with all of his contributions and this bequest is just one more reminder that it is our responsibility to secure the future of what we believe in."
Jennifer Vieth of Carpenter Nature Center said, "Dan made a huge impact on the Hudson Community and his legacy will continue."
John Potter of the Phipps Center said the bequest was made in the name of Dan and Jean Greenwald.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Jean. He has a daughter, Vicki. Huebner of Flemington, NJ, and son Jack Greenwald of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Planned Giving
A planned gift, like that of Dan Greenwald, is one which is legally consummated during the donor's lifetime, with the principal benefiting the organization at a future date. Planned giving offers the opportunity to make a charitable contribution from one's life assets, not annual income.
Types of planned gifts include bequests, life insurance, life income agreements, charitable gift annuity, pooled income funds, charitable remainder unitrusts, and annuity trusts, revocable trusts, life estates, and charitable lead trusts.
