Birth Center and Family Education Classes

Families living throughout the St. Croix Valley area are invited to join the maternity, birth and family education programs at Hudson Hospital & Clinics. We have designed classes with you in mind, knowing you want the latest in medical knowledge along with a strong support system of caring professionals.


During our classes, small groups of people gather in a relaxed setting while a highly trained expert leads discussions about the secrets and celebrations of nurturing a healthy family. The following classes are designed to give family members important, life enhancing, health information:

Childbirth Class Five-week Series

A five-class series designed to help prepare parents for childbirth. Class topics include: physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth; vaginal and Cesarean birth; birthing techniques; relaxation; comfort and breathing techniques; role of birthing companion; labor pain medication options; mother and baby care; unexpected outcomes; transitioning home with baby; working with your medical care team; and special topics of interest to each individual class series group. The class includes a tour of the labor, delivery and nursery areas of the hospital.

Childbirth Class Express Weekend 

A two-class series designed to help prepare parents for childbirth. Class topics include: physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth; vaginal and Cesarean birth; birthing techniques; relaxation; comfort and breathing techniques; role of birthing companion; labor pain management options; mother and baby care; unexpected outcomes; working with your medical care staff; and special topics of interest to each individual class series group. Note, this class is “express.” The shortened schedule does not allow for as in-depth of topic coverage as during the five-class series and access to guest speakers may be limited. The class includes a tour of the labor, delivery and nursery areas of the hospital.

Childbirth Refresher Class

This class is designed for parents with previous birth and class experience. During the class, parents will be given a review of the labor and birth process; relaxation and breathing techniques; and pain management options. The class includes a tour of the labor, delivery and nursery areas of the hospital.

Baby Building Class 

In this one hour seminar you will learn about nutrition in preparation for conception, healthy nutrition during pregnancy and healthy nutrition for breastfeeding. This class is designed to help you make sure you are taking all of the right steps to ensure the health of you and your baby. Handouts and recipes are provided and class is led by a Licensed and Registered Dietitian.

Breastfeeding Class

Learn the benefits of breastfeeding for mom, baby and the family during this single-session class. Topics include the physiology of milk production, positioning techniques, partner’s involvement, managing your schedule around baby’s needs, and information about choosing and using a breast pump.


This class is recommended prior to childbirth. Additional one-on-one education and support is available through lactation educators at Hudson Hospital & Clinics.

Big Brother, Big Sister Class

This class helps you and your child prepare for the new baby by practicing sibling-related activities, as well as providing guidance for parents in common challenging situations. The class includes a tour of the labor, delivery and nursery areas of the hospital, special video, activities and a snack. Be sure to bring a doll or teddy bear for diaper practice.

Since children tend to learn and retain more in shorter time periods, the class lasts 90-minutes and is recommended during the last trimester of pregnancy.

Personalized Teaching

Private and personalized teaching is conveniently available for partners and women with special needs. Cost includes materials.


Times Offered:  Days or early evenings

Location: Hudson Hospital & Clinics Conference Rooms

Cost: $25 per hour, minimum of two-hour appointments

Parents Education and Support Group

Come meet others experiencing similar joys and concerns of parenting while giving and receiving encouragement. This ongoing drop-in group meets in a relaxed environment twice a month. Group meetings rotate from general facilitated support discussions to more formal education topics with guest speakers. The group’s goal is to help families transition into a life with baby through support, education and connections to others.


Times Offered: First and third Tuesday of each month, 10 to 11:30 a.m. (unless holiday)

Cost: No cost
