Pete

While I don’t have kids of my own, I like to say I’m a pseudo-parent to the children of my family and friends. I find great joy in being involved in their lives, teaching them and listening to them. It’s heartbreaking to hear how bullying and social media are impacting the mental health of our youth and has made growing up so much harder. We continually hear news stories about someone who’s been bullied through social media, driving them into depression and in the worst cases, committing suicide.

We need to make the world better and safer for the next generation, particularly related to their mental health. If my neighbors need help, they can find food and practical resources. But what I don’t see as much is how people, especially young people, can get help with mental health. Those services are just not as visible or readily accessible. The question was, how do I help change this?

Through the legacy planning program at Hudson Hospital Foundation, I was able to map out different legacy scenarios, incorporating different charitable tools and considering the potential long-term impact on specific people and causes.

I realized I could be intentional about my estate, setting up strategic gifts to directly benefit those closest to me, and also give to organizations that I trust to make a positive difference in the lives of children, holistically, for the long haul.

As part of legacy planning, I set aside a bequest for the Hudson Hospital Foundation to use specifically to further its mental health programs. There’s a “Zero Suicide” initiative at the hospital, which includes training and escalation and referral protocols for staff to utilize when a patient demonstrates signs of mental health struggles. Supporting the Hudson Hospital Foundation with this legacy gift is a way to make the world better for the next generation while partnering with an organization that cares about kids as much as I do.

When I think about why I give to the Hudson Hospital Foundation, my brain immediately goes to the Emergency Room expansion and mental health care commitments we’ve recently made. But as a volunteer at our hospital, I also have many stories that may not make the front page of the newspaper, yet are equally impactful to those we serve.

Having a well-funded foundation means being able to support our community’s graduating seniors with college scholarships to study for a career in health care. It means having the resources to coordinate rides home from the hospital for patients who need them. I’ve even watched a hospital employee collaborate with a veterinary clinic to arrange shelter for the pet of a patient who hadn’t planned on visiting the ER that evening.

One of the long-standing programs supported by the Foundation that affects my family directly is the sharps container and needle disposal program. I’m the mom of a child with type 1 diabetes. The logistics of coordinating doctor visits, insulin, glucose-monitoring system, pump supply purchases and more can feel like a full-time job. Not to mention this chronic disease can mount a $20,000 bill yearly for many families. The one thing we don’t have to worry about is sanitary needle disposal. I have our foundation to lean on for this.

While the Hudson Hospital Foundation works in both public and private ways, not a day goes by that someone in our community isn’t positively impacted by the gifts of our generous donors. I invite you to join me in supporting our Foundation.

As an oncology and infusion nurse at Hudson Hospital & Clinic since 2012, I know firsthand the challenges that many patients face when undergoing treatment. Some patients receive more than 500 hours of care, and some visits can last six hours or longer. Patients often express ideas about how their visits could be improved, and we give these ideas to the foundation. Seeing how the foundation turns patients’ ideas into reality is so rewarding.

I donate to the Infusion Center Fund through Hudson Hospital Foundation’s Employee Giving Campaign. The fund provides support for equipment to help patients receive the most comfortable care possible. We recently purchased reclining chairs with heated seats and backrests, as well as massage functions. Every cent of every donation to the foundation is used to benefit patients, the community and the hospital.
