Hudson Hospital Rehabilitation Center physical therapist, Lisa Mesia, DPT, was certified in Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) on June 11, 2017. The certification class was offered as part of a grant associated with the opening of the new Health Partners’ Neuroscience Center in St. Paul.
As a Parkinson disease-specialized therapist, Lisa will use research-based exercise approaches (dance, tai chi, boxing, agility, pole walking) or task-specific training routines (walking, strength, freezing, activities of daily living, agility, and coordination). Exercise programs will be customized to address multiple symptoms with personalized goals for all levels of disease severity and fitness for optimal benefit for individuals with Parkinson or Parkinson-like symptoms. This exercise program has been found to be successful for patients newly diagnosed with Parkinson disease and as the disease progresses with more obvious symptoms. It was developed by Dr. Becky G. Farley who is known for developing the LSVT®BIG exercise program commonly known to be successful in treating patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Mesia received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. She joined the Hudson Hospital rehab team in 2017. In addition to her certification in Parkinson’s, Lisa also specialized in vestibular therapy, spine care, and orthopedics.
