Hospitalist program growing at Hudson

There’s a growing specialty at Hudson - the hospitalists program. Hospitalists are specialists who provide care for hospitalized patients, from admitting to discharge.
What’s unique about Hudson is no other hospital in western Wisconsin provides this model of care.

This spring Leslie Surbeck, MD joined Bhavin Patel, MD, board-certified in internal medical, to provide care for patients at Hudson Hospital. Hospitalists have a focused practice in acute, inpatient care. They provide much needed continuous care to inpatients, while communicating with the patients’ primary care physician to coordinate care. Another hospitalist, Lyudmila Islyamova, MD will join their team in July.

Hospitalists programs have been in place at large metropolitan hospitals for more than 16 years, and the practice is now spreading to smaller, regional hospitals. Because they specialize in inpatient hospital care, they are up-to-date on the latest advancements and developments for hospitalized patients. By focusing on hospitalized patients, who tend to be more severely ill than outpatients, they are experienced in caring for those who are severely or chronically ill. The goal of the hospitalist care is to be primarily responsible for any care needs for the patients while they are inpatients, while serving as a partner with the patient’s primary care provider back home.

“We help primary care providers by providing efficient, high-quality, specialized care in the hospital, which allows them to focus their attention on the outpatients at the clinic,” said Dr. Patel, who has been with the HealthPartners Hospital Medicine program since 2005. Consistently seeing hospital patients every day of the week, “hospitalists have improved quality of care by providing extra focus on the problems unique to inpatients,” said Dr. Patel. “For example, patients with heart failure, heart attack, pneumonia require more attention. The hospitalist can provide that focus. We work closely with other specialists who may be involved in a patient’s case, such as an orthopedic surgeon, general surgeon, and others. The hospitalist is your primary physician while you are in the hospital, and help transition you back to your primary care physician when you are discharged.”

The hospitalists at Hudson hospital are part of the HealthPartners Hospital Medicine program and also practice at Regions Hospital.
